Better Together – Milwaukee Jewish Day School

This week I had the joy of working with the program “Better Together” from Milwaukee Jewish Day School, they pair up retired community members with 8th grade students. Monday’s lesson was about Food and Jewish Memory.  It was truly a joy watching the bond between the community members and the 8th graders, and the commonality of being Jewish really brings them together no matter their ages.

First they started with a discussion on Jewish food memories and what stands out in their lives.  Then we moved on to splitting the group up and they helped prepare four items for their lunch.  They had an Israeli buffet that we prepared for them for lunch, and they prepared their Israeli salad, hummus, zhug and cabbage salad. They worked together and adjusted flavors to taste and really worked well together to create their dishes.

I love how much we are involved in the community but this program truly highlights the reason I love it.  Watching the connections in our amazing community through different religious levels, ages, countries of origin and more!  Hoping in the future I get to oversee many more programs like this!

This Shabbat may we all remember that the Jewish people may be a small part of the world population but we are connected across languages, countries, even customs but there is an amazing bond of tradition going back 1000’s of years!

Shabbat Shalom
